Exciting news! This week, WCG was selected by the Commonwealth’s Department of Housing and Community Development and Governor’s Office as an awardee on behalf of the Housing Trust Fund Supportive Housing rental round. A total of $826,000.00 will be provided to WCG from the Housing Trust Fund, Home Innovation Fund, Facilities Consolidation Fund and the City of Worcester. The funds will be utilized to rehabilitate a long time blighted property located at 21 Jaques Avenue. (Press release: http://www.mass.gov/…/admin-announces-20m-for-supportive-af…)
Worcester Common Ground has developed many initiatives on Jaques Ave. and Preston Street, including homeownership projects, community gardens, and our proposed Bioshelter project just down the street at our 7-9 Jaques Ave Urban Orchard. This building, in its current vacant state, lends sanction to the illicit activities in the neighborhood. A substantially rehabilitated and occupied building will serve as positive presence, promoting neighborhood pride and a sense of community.
We’re incredibly excited to be breaking ground on this new project – Thank you to our state and city partners for making this project a reality! A special congratulations to our Worcester friends at Abby's House for also being selected as an award recipient -- big things are coming to Worcester!
